Statement on the Recent Allegations Involving Senator Niezgodski

Most women know what it is like to have unwanted attention. We also know how quickly it can

go from unnerving to dangerous, especially when dealing with people that have positions of

power. The #Metoo movement showed that we don’t need to be alone, that most of us have

experienced this. I have advocated for women and women’s rights my entire life and now is no

different. I cannot stay silent when the moment calls for a serious discussion.

The recent Tribune article pointed out the divisions and uncertainty in our leaders in how to deal

with these allegations. Some are calling for Senator Niezgodski’s resignation while others are

saying he paid his dues and it is a personal matter. I want to be clear that it is NOT a private

matter when a sitting Senator engages in behavior like this, and then uses his position to

pressure others into silence. Anyone who speaks up can and likely will be targeted with political

pressure and harassment, including myself. It won’t be the last time.

I am running because we need leadership in our county and our state. We need to face these

issues and show how we will hold people accountable when they make mistakes like this. How

can we have faith in anyone to represent us if their words and actions are at odds? Leadership

means taking a stand, regardless of risk. I believe Senator Niezgodski must apologize for his

actions and the perception that he attempted to hide them. If he does not, our community

leaders must show leadership and demand it, as well as encouraging further discussion on

creating safe environments in our spaces and a commitment to hold each other accountable

when we fall short.
